"Gheorghe Dima" Music Academy of Cluj-Napoca (Romania)

The "Gheorghe Dima" Music Academy of Cluj-Napoca is a one of the largest and oldest music school in Romania.

The „Gheorghe Dima" Music Academy came into being in 1919, part of a lively modernizing process involving the whole Romanian education system that was triggered by the exceptionally dynamic post-war reconstruction climate. The Academy's first rector, Gheorghe Dima, has set high quality standards - acquired during his studies in Germany - to the recently established institution. The European vocation and a cult for quality have been and still are - a constant all throughout the history of this institution that has succesively borne the name of Conservatorul de muzică şi artă dramatică, Academia de Muzică şi Artă Dramatică (since 1931) and Conservatorul de Muzică „Gh. Dima" (since 1950). As from 1990, the institution received its current name: Academia de Muzică "Gh. Dima".

Among the current and former professors we may name foremost personalities in the composition and performance domains, as well as standout Romanian musicologists - among whom two members of the Romanian Academy, the composers Sigismund Toduţă and Cornel Ţăranu. For the first time in Romania, doctoral studies within the musical field and the Musicology Ph. D. title were established at the Conservatory in Cluj in 1971, vividly advocated by Sigismund Toduţă. Therefore, many of the most esteemed musicians in the country - including Bucharest - have been awarded the Ph. D. title in Cluj.

Mission statement

Since 1990, the "Gheorghe Dima" Music Academy has been one of the most active institutions of higher musical education in Romania, as it reconsidered the cultural values of Romanian music and encouraged some initiatives such as: curricula reform, the institution management reform, research on national and international level, interinstitutional relations, introduction of the European credit transfer system (ECTS).

Education
As a main objective, the Academy intends to offer higher qualifications for its students, in the fields of composition, conducting, opera directing, instrumental interpretation, musicology, music pedagogy, singing and choreography. The teaching combines the informative and formative aspects, giving a complex structure of personality to the students. It reconsiders the curricula structures according to the job market. It emphasises the formative aspect of learning and it changes the evaluation structures. Through its partnerships with other higher musical education institutions from abroad, the Academy is an ambassador of the Romanian musical culture in the large universal concert of the world.

Research
The Academy provides support to individual research in every field of musical life: composition, interpretation, musicology. Through its institutional programes it supports the team research on local, national and international level. The teaching staff and the students of the Academy are active participants to many international cultural programmes.

Civica Scuola di Liuteria di Milano

Municipal Stringed Instruments School in Milan

Historical aspects

The first course of the Municipal Stringed Instruments School in Milan dates back to 1978 when the Civica Scuola di Musica, the municipal school of music, with the support of a private institution, set up open courses geared to the restoration of antique musical instruments.

A workshop for stringed instruments was then opened in the old Milanese craftsmen's quarter of the Isola, where in a few square metres a group of students headed by architect Marco Tiella rediscovered a traditional craft, that of rebuilding old vielles, zithers, lyres, spinets and violas da gamba.

Since their origin, courses have been characterized by a harmonious balance between research and manual work. These course subsequently developed into the Civica Scuola di Liuteria (Municipal Stringed Instruments School), which is presently geared to a professional training approach.

Today the training of stringed instrument makers, builders and restorers of wooden musical instruments is still based on a close relationship, established during the school years, between student and teacher, which unfolds in a workshop and is further enhanced by a store of historical and musical knowledge and technical know-how.

The rediscovery of this ancient craft, using new technologies, by a work-group of teachers working together with cultural institutions, trade associations and experts active in this sector are the School's mainstays.

The school today

Courses at Milan's Civica Scuola di Liuteria are subdivided into professional and refresher courses, refresher workshops and non-professional courses for beginners and non-professionals. Every year, nearly 70 students, both Italian and foreign, attend the school.

The library and archives, containing drawings and photographic records, are open to the public. You will also find a collection of the major specialized journals on musical instruments, together with reliefs of original instruments both from various European museums and produced by the school itself.

Since its foundation, the School has always participated in many different external activities such as exhibitions, meetings and concerts organized in co-operation with prestigious cultural institutions and associations both in Italy and abroad.

Nowadays the Municipal School of musici is coordinated by Ms. Virginia Villa.
